Case Studies
Soil Moisture HH
  • HH is preferable to VV due to the greater penetration into the vegetation cover
Dual-Pol/ Quad-Pol
  • Expected improvement in mapping of surficial deposits and rock units in vegetated terrain based on the polarimetric response
Snow Quad-Pol
  • More accurate knowledge of snow pack composition such as snow-water equivalent and snow extent
Wetlands VV or HH
  • Both are suitable for detecting wetlands. Studies suggest:
    • Effective in dense marsh communities
    • Viable for non-woody wetlands and herbaceous wetlands
    • VV better than HH for low density marsh lands
    • HH better than VV for flooded forest
Quad-Pol
  • Improved discrimination of wetland classes
Inter-tidal Zone HV
  • Expected to enhance shoreline mapping by increasing contrast between land and water
Dual-Pol
  • Provides additional information to enhance coastal zone mapping (tidal and near shore mapping) through the increased sensitivity to structural differences in targets observed
